Leslie Charipar, Theatre Cedar Rapids' artistic director and also director of "Gypsy," says one of the reasons the show was put on the schedule is because it's set during the 1920s and '30s, the same time Theatre Cedar Rapids was getting off the ground."We decided to take the next couple of seasons and go decade by decade through our history," says Charipar, 41, of Cedar Rapids. Aside from "Gypsy" fitting into theater officials' preferred timeline, Charipar says it's just a great show."'Gypsy' absolutely is one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time," Charipar says.Theatre Cedar Rapids Artistic Director Leslie Charipar talks to the cast of "Gypsy" during rehearsal at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids on Aug. 7.Charipar says McCool is doing a great job portraying Mama Rose."She plays this role from her guts," Charipar says."She has a very visceral understanding of this character."Charipar also has kind words for Katie Knutson, who plays Louise.Charipar says Louise is a difficult role because the character has to take a journey from naive mama's girl to independent burlesque star as she grows from a teenager into an adult."Katie is playing the role effortlessly," Charipar says.
