As Dr. Les Sternberg leaves the Deanship of USC's College of Education, he reflects on his years as the College's Dean and what has been accomplished through the hard work of his staff.
Evidently, people are taking notice of what's occurring at USC as the College recently hosted about 70 individuals from across the Nation who will be members of future Boards of Examiners for NCATE, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Many more accomplishments have occurred during Dr. Sternberg's tenure; USC now works with 140 schools in 7 districts in the greater Columbia area and more than 80 percent of teacher preparation courses are being taught on-site in local schools. Hear Dr. Sternberg reflect on the past and future of teacher education at USC on this week's podcast. "Compared to years past, obviously our graduates are not being as successful in terms of getting positions," said Les Sternberg, dean of the USC College of Education.
"That is just a reflection of what is happening." Sternberg said he is counseling graduates not to lose heart, because he believes once the economic recession is over, there will be a huge teacher shortage, and one that newly minted graduates will be able to fill. "I'm not hearing necessarily that people are giving up," he said.

Either way, "You're going to see a whole lot of hurt at Richland 1," says Les Sternberg, dean of the USC College of Education.
Sternberg conducted a years-long analysis of Richland 1, culminating in a 2008 report that Mayor Bob Coble described as the most effective study the city has ever commissioned.
