Hulcoop retires as agriculture educator with CCE Dutchess
Les Hulcoop, a Cornell Cooperative Extension agriculture educator based in Millbrook, has retired. Dutchess' Cornell Cooperative Extension, or CCE, hired Mohammad Faroze to replace Hulcoop and fill another vacant position. Hulcoop, who is helping Faroze with his orientation, graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in ornamental horticulture and a master's degree in teaching. As an extension educator, Hulcoop developed the Hudson Valley Harvest logo - a label for foods produced locally - and the Dutchess County produce map. He organized local farmers' markets, field crop art projects, tomato-tasting contests, farm tours and more. He encouraged the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park to buy local produce. Most recently, he spent years studying switch grass, a perennial grass that can be grown without pesticides, holds soil against erosion and provides habitat for wildlife. (2 of 2) For his bio-fuel work and farm-sustainability initiatives , he won the Environmental Distinguished Achievement Award in 2007 from Mohonk Consultations, New Paltz. "Les, you did a lot of good things for Cornell," said a teary-eyed Dave Tetor, a former Dutchess CCE executive. Tetor served on the panel that hired Hulcoop in 1987. Hulcoop recalled his first day at Dutchess CCE when he read a note left on his desk that said, "Your fly is open." "They didn't want to embarrass me. I knew it was a caring staff," he said. In his retirement, Hulcoop is looking forward to visiting his 95-year-old father in Buffalo once a week. He also hopes to support the next generation of farmers. "I still very, very much want to be involved ," he said. Les Hulcoop shares a laugh with Linda Keech, executive director of Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County. The retiring Hulcoop will help Mohammad Faroze of Guyana step into his role as agriculture educator. "It runs along the same idea as certified organic produce or food," said Les Hulcoop, agricultural program director at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Dutchess County about the concept of crate-free eggs.Hulcoop said although there is no scientific evidence proving those foods are healthier, he does think it seems logical.Despite their appeal, however, Hulcoop says caged birds do produce more eggs than pastured or free-range chickens."It would be tough to supply the needs of the Northeast with only uncaged birds," Hulcoop said.

"They're in short supply," Les Hulcoop, an agricultural agent with the Cornell Cooperative Extension for 20 years, said of young farmers."Most farm meetings I organize are 50 years or older folks."The dearth of 20- and 30-somethings plowing the fields or tending the cows carries extra worries today, Hulcoop and others said.

Dutchess towns, notably Red Hook, have passed right-to-farm laws that build on a statewide right-to-farm law that is backed up by state lawyers who will defend a farm's right to perform activities deemed normal on farms, said Les Hulcoop, agricultural program director for the Dutchess County Cornell Cooperative Extension.
Manure spreading is the classic example of a common farm practice that is often unsettling to neighbors, he said.

It will be held rain or shine and attendance is expected to be in the thousands, said Les Hulcoop, agriculture marketing director for the Dutchess County Cornell Cooperative Extension. "We're looking at about 3,000 to 4,000 people," said Hulcoop, who is also coordinating this year's expo. The mid-Hudson is ripe for such an agricultural event because of its long history of small farms and its convenient location in the mid-Northeast area, Hulcoop said. Admission is $5 for adults, and children under 14 are free.A camping facility will be available for those who make reservations ahead of time, he said. Les Hulcoop can be reached via e-mail at lch7@cornell.edu
