A more realistic approach to stevia is some growers may get interested in selling directly to consumers at markets and farmstands, said Les Hulcoop, an agriculture educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension in Dutchess County.
Hulcoop introduced local farmers to stevia at a recent growers' meeting, he said. The farm consultant's opinion is stevia will become a niche herb farmers sell at farmers markets directly to consumers, similar to basil or mint. "With any new crop in the county here, there are two challenges: processing of the crop and marketing of the crop," Hulcoop said.

Les Hulcoop, the senior resource educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension, said it's too early in the season for the outbreaks to affect tomato farmers as a whole."People will be thinking twice about out-of-state tomatoes and buying local tomatoes," he said.
