Leonard Strickman, dean of Florida International University's 5-year-old law school, acknowledged efforts to recruit more diverse students can be hurt by the desire to rank highly on U.S. News & World Report's annual list of top 100 law schools. He said that because minority students tend to have lower test scores many law schools sideline diversity recruiting under the mistaken belief that will help maintain high test scores and other indicators used to rank the schools. Because a school's position on the list relies heavily on the high grade point averages and Law School Admission Test scores of their candidates, the effort to continue diversifying law schools suffers, he said."Nobody's completely ignoring (diversity) today, [but] the importance of U.S. News may make diversity less important," he said. Still he said, "It would be an oversimplification to say law schools are doing something wrong."Law schools must contend with judicial and legislative environments that are still "up in the air" on diversity, Strickman said.Former Gov.
