Leon Stroud of Suncoast RV shows off some of his company,s inventory.
View Larger Although many businesses wrote off 2008 as a total loss, local recreational vehicle dealers saw an uptick in foot traffic and sales during the past two months. "November/December was equal to or better than November/December 2007 — sales are more normal now," said Leon Stroud, general manager of Suncoast RV in Winter Garden, who declined to reveal revenue figures. That's a bit of a relief for Stroud, whose sales were off by as much as 50 percent between March and October. Stroud believes gas prices, which rose to $4 a gallon last summer and recently dropped to about $1.60, have been a major factor in both hurting and, later, helping sales. Although Stroud, Douglas and Ehrhardt expect sales to continue to improve in 2009, they aren't sure how long that will last. Stroud won't make any predictions past the next four or five months when the usually healthy tourist-buying season is over and he has to rely on local sales.
