A marine biologist, Professor Leo Tan Wee Hin began his career in the University of Singapore as a Senior Tutor in 1973. He became a Lecturer in Zoology and Physiology in 1974. He was seconded to the Singapore Science Centre as CEO in 1982, concurrently holding his position as Senior Lecturer in The National University of Singapore (NUS). In 1991, he was appointed Associate Professor and Foundation Dean of Science in Nanyang Technological University, tasked to help build the new National Institute of Education (NIE) for teacher education. A full professorship came a year later, and in 1994, he was appointed the Director of NIE. In 2008, his career turned a complete cycle when he returned to NUS as Professor and Director (Special Projects) in the Science Dean's Office. He is conducting surveys of the marine life at the off-shore Semakau Landfill, working on interdisciplinary programmes, in the areas of environmental & biodiversity education and research.
His present leadership roles include Chair of the Garden City Fund, President of the Singapore National Academy of Science, Vice Chair of the Singapore Environmental Council and Chair of the Science Sub-Commission of the Singapore National Commission for UNESCO. He also represents Singapore as Governor on the Asia-Europe Foundation.

Professor Leo Tan
Professor Leo Tan is a veteran marine biologist, well-known for his contributions to science, education, and conservation in Singapore. He received his Bachelor of Science degree (Honours) from the then University of Singapore, thereafter pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Marine Biology from his alma mater. Presently, he is the Director of Special Projects at the Faculty of Science, National University of Singapore, concurrent with his role as the President of the Singapore National Academy of Science. Over the years, Prof. Tan has worn many hats, including that as the Director of the Singapore Science Centre; Director and concurrent Dean of Science, National Institute of Education (NIE); Professor of Biological Sciences, NTU; and Chairman of the National Parks Board.
Prof. Tan has received numerous awards for his outstanding contributions throughout the years, including the National Science & Technology Medal (now known as the President's Science & Technology Medal), The President's Award for the Environment, Fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Science, and the Honorary Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Biology. The French government has awarded him the Ordre National du Merite.
