The Trust > Leonard J. Soucy
Len Soucy (1932-2014) was a naturalist, photographer, lecturer, author, raptor researcher and avian rehabilitator. He held a master bird-banding license from the U.S. Department of Interior and worked with raptors for nearly 45 years. Soucy published much scientific information gathered from his field studies. Len was the founder and director of the non-profit organization, The Raptor Trust.
Begun by Len and his wife Diane over 30 years ago as a modest backyard avian care center, the Trust has grown to be one of the largest, most comprehensive facilities of its kind in the nation. From 1982 until 2015 over 90,000 hawks, owls and other wild birds have been cared for at TRT. Nearly half of them have been returned to the wild. Approximately 50 unreleasable raptors permanently reside at the Trust.
An on-site education center was added to the facility in 1989. Len Soucy's work has been recognized locally and nationally, and he has received awards from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the New Jersey Veterinary Foundation and the Humane Society of the United States, to name a few.
In 1986 he was honored with The National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 1988 Len received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Drew University. A lifetime resident of New Jersey, Len passed away from complications with heart disease and asthma in June, 2014. His wife, Diane, and son, Chris, continue the work of The Raptor Trust today.
