...Pastor Leland began at Faith E Free on July 1, 2007, after graduating from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in May.
During the last year he
also served at a church in the Chicago area.
"I love all ages and each age group has their own distinctions, and in my previous church, I had to serve all ages," Schmidt
said."But with youth, it's such a critical point in life. It's like the last 'on-ramp' going into adulthood, and God's really been puttnig a strong burden on my heart to help develop these future leaders."This strong burden for youth has been developing recently, but the burden for ministry started while Schmidt co-managed the family farm near Elma, IA. Before that, he spent nine years as a manager with Cenex/Land O' Lakes.
While working, he
found himself serving in the areas of Sunday School and AWANA Children's ministry. He
also helped in dramas, men's ministry, junior high Sunday School or wherever he
In 2003, Leland
was struggling with finding a balance between farming and wanting to do ministry, and it was during one of his
quiet times that God showed him he
needed to give it all â€" ALL of his
time to ministry.His
wife Kathi and their two children: Cale and Dondi downsized and moved into an apartment in Chicago.Four years later, he's received his Masters of Divinity and is now preparing to serve in the Iowa Great Lakes region.
is excited about developing relationships with the teenagers and their families. He
wants to help them connect the dots and be ready to be turned loose as they grow into adults.
"When you consider the potential that this generation represents and think about the gospel being unleashed by them, it is exciting! It's definitly not about me, but being used by God," Leland
said."God has been using this church for a long time.
