It was Pastor Washington who, in 1989, led Reid Temple from its Northeast Washington, D. C., location to Lanham, Maryland.
The church later moved to a larger sanctuary and school facilities, and as it grew, Pastor Washington continued to outline a broad vision for the Reid Temple congregation based on the "Five E's": Evangelism, Education, Economics, Empowerment, and Expansion.
Pastor Washington's gifted preaching and teaching styles has led him to be featured in Upscale magazine, which identified him as a "national spiritual leader. The Afro-American newspaper called him "one of the top preachers in the Washington (DC) Metro area. As each of his four Sunday worship services and weekday Bible Study classes increasingly were filled to capacity, the need for an even larger worship complex became increasingly evident.
By 2001, under His guidance and Pastor Washington's leadership, the Reid Temple A.M.E. Church congregation had acquired 32 acres of land in suburban Glenn Dale, Maryland. There, it built the spacious, ultra-modern sanctuary and educational worship complex that today houses most of the church's multifaceted services, programs, and ministries.
In December 2004, Pastor Washington led the first services at the Glenn Dale campus. He continues to conduct Sunday services there, and his Wednesday night Bible Study classes offer a variety of subjects targeted for spiritual growth and discipleship development on topics ranging from "Before Sunday Morning - Preparing to Preach," "Evangelism in Your Local Church," and "How to Get Sick in Ministry," to "God's Foundation for Blessings" and "Your Economic Destiny. He is frequently quoted on issues related to the "mega-church" phenomena and has been featured in the Washington Post, Washington Times, Bowie Gazette, PG Post, and Washington Informer newspapers. He has given numerous radio and television interviews and has been honored on many occasions as "Pastor of the Week" and "Pastor of the Month."
Pastor Washington received his Doctor of Ministry and Master of Divinity degrees from Howard University, his Bachelor of Science degree in the behavioral and social sciences from the University of Maryland-College Park, his Associates degree from the Community College of Baltimore, and his general business degree from Cortez W. Peters Business College in Chicago. He is the author of Identifying Conflict Management Strategies in a Black Church (Vantage Press, 1987) and a contributing author to the African American Devotional Bible (Zondervan, 1997). He has authored the following booklets: From Membership to Fellowship: Reid Temple, The Commission System for Corporate Churches, The Reid Temple Stewardship Manual, and The Discipleship Development Manual.
Pastor Washington is the recipient of the National Business Honor Society Award, an Outstanding Young Man of America award, the Henry Maynard Preaching Award, the Howard University Excellence in Ministry Award, the Second Episcopal District Living Legend Award in Ministry, the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps' Martin Luther King, Jr., Award, the A.M.E. Department of Worship and Evangelism's Soul Winner's Award, and the Spirituality and Medicine Award from Howard University Hospital.
Pastor Washington presently chairs the Board of Examiners for the Washington Conference of the A.M.E. Church. He has served the A.M.E. Church as Northeast Regional Director of Evangelism, Director of Ministry Beyond the Sanctuary (for the Washington, D.C., Conference), Director of the Annual Conference Institute, Dean of Christian Education Institute, Second Episcopal District, Director of Evangelism, and Director of Stewardship. He also has been a delegate to the last five general conferences.
Pastor Washington is married to Anna Brooks Washington.
