If so, let the story of Dr. Lee Stapleton
be your inspiration. Lee Stapleton
was a mother, wife, and partner to an Episcopalian priest for many years. At 57 years of age, she
decided to pursue a desire that had been a quiet visitor for most of her
adult life.Due to other responsibilities, when this visitor rang her
up in the communication system of her
would continue to shoo it away, like an unwanted salesperson.
responsibilities to her
children were completed and with her
husband's blessing and encouragement, she
finally answered the call of her
desire, and embarked on a life changing road trip. Her
desire was to go to medical school. At 57 years old, most medical schools would not accept her
because of her
age.However, one school did.Lee
attended a medical school in Grenada. Her
journey to Grenada did not include her
husband, who remained in the U.S., so loneliness was a constant companion during her
years of medical school. Lee
doggedly pursued her
dream with her
husband's unfailing support.While his
support was unfailing, his
health was not.He
died at the conclusion of her
year of internship.Her
desire to achieve her
goal provided the companionship that she
needed during the remainder of her
educational and training journey. Dr. Lee Stapleton is now a physician practicing in Chattanooga, TN.
When is it too late to pursue your desires and goals?Never!Death is what happens to us when we run out of goals and dreams. If you look at most residents in a nursing home (which has also been referred to as God's waiting room) or residents in assisted living programs, which ones seem most alive? The ones who continue to pursue their interests.Their interests or desires may lie in achieving a grand slam in bridge, taking an active interest in their grandchildren's lives, working on an arts and crafts program, or even taking classes in subjects in which they are interested.
Remember Dr. Stapleton
finally took the phone call and it has made all the difference in the world to herself and others.
Affirmation for this week:
I will honor my age, wisdom, experience, and desires.I will not be afraid to pick up the phone and say... "I am ready to listen now, and I am so glad that you called me."
Have a listening week.
