> BLOOMINGTON -- Lee Newcom thinks customer service is the key to business success."Excellent customer service is not an option," he said. And, if elected McLean County recorder, Newcom would have an open-door policy, including to military veterans who want a certified copy of their discharge papers, one of the many documents the office records.Right now, Newcom said the office doesn't make that a high priority and, as a result, veterans have to go to another county's recorder's office to get the needed papers."The veterans issue is very important to me," said Newcom, a Republican who defeated Recorder Ruth Weber in the March primary. But it is only one of the things he would change."The recorder's office is going through technology changes," he said."There is a lot of new technology (the office) is on the edge of adopting. It's gradually becoming less manual."Newcom said his background is "perfectly suited to evaluate, judge and implement new software for the office."He is a public relations consultant and former president of the United Republican Fund of Illinois and owner of Route 66 Xpress Lube in Bloomington.Irregularities were found in the United Republican Fund while he was president, which Newcom blamed on a bookkeeper, whom he fired.Another change he would consider is reinstating credit for frequent customers and increasing interaction with other county departments, including administration, treasurer, auditors and also the county board's finance committee.

McLean County Recorder Lee Newcom says he's not opposed to a vote to close the recorder's office. (Photo by WJBC/Eric Stock) Newcom doesn't object to ballot question Newcom said he doesn't object to a voter referendum to closing the recorder's office. Newcom said he'd prefer the recorder's duty be assigned to a county board appointee as opposed to an elected official. He said his main concern is updating and preserving the county's land records. Newcom said he's in a race against time to update some records which are on microfilm and date back to the 1800s. "We've probably got two to three years to finish that, which means it will have them ready for the next 100 years and if I have to exit the office in two years, the timing is probably about right for that," Newcom said. Newcom said replacing an elected official with a full-time office manager and a new clerical employee would just about erase any cost savings. Lee Newcom, R State’s Attorney His comments at the end of the County Board meeting this morning come in response to a recent Finance Committee meeting, where County Auditor Lee Newcom responded to allegations that he acted irresponsibly and misused a county-issued credit card for travel. Newcom says the accusation has constantly been vague. "It was another vague reference to me misusing a card, when in fact the controversy was over my attempts to save money. I have not misused the credit card for personal reasons," Newcom said. Newcom says the County Board sets county-wide policy, but says a county-wide elected official isn't bound to follow it, setting internal policy. He says he follows 99 percent of County Board policy, but says one time he didn't follow one line, which he says would require spending more money on a hotel room when traveling.
