Co-Founder Elizabeth Moller; Dr. Lee Kalvaitis; Scott Gebhard and Vice President/Co-Founder Dane Hancock. Dave and Marie Sigler and Lee Kalvaitis, Dr. Lee Kalvaitis Dr. Lee Kalvaitis i s co-founder of National Week of the Ocean as well as the Week of the Ocean School Marine Fair. Her most recent teaching was for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade gifted science classes and 8th grade on level science classes at Westpine Middle School. She also heads the Science Department of the Broward County Fair and is a founding member and present member of the Broward County Science Fair. She utlilized her experience to structure the Week of the Ocean School Marine Fair which incorporates projects for K-12 students from the arts to the sciences and which has involved more than one million students locally to date. Guests enjoyed catering by Contemporary Caterers and a tour of the 24th Annual School Marine Fair, coordinated by NWO board member Lee Kalvaitis and Linda Irwin, IGFA Special Events Coordinator. Attendees included Julie Ciucevich, president, Ocean Watch Foundation; Frank Herhold, MIASF Executive Director, Dan Vawter, Membership Development and board members Joe Purtell and Patience Welton; Pat Crowley, Broward County Schools; Isabelle Peaslee, National Sea Turtle Foundation; Ray Brasted, Promenade Newspaper; Marie and Norbert McLaughlin and NWO board members Marcy Decker, Cynthia Hancock, Lee Kalvaitis and Marie Sigler. Co-Founder Lee Kalvaitis was recognized for her 24-year Week of the Ocean School Marine Fair program. Kalvaitis was named National Week of the Ocean Volunteer of the Year. Organization co-founder and School Marine Fair Director, she has served for 24 years.

In 1979, co-founder Lee Kalvaitis designed the School Marine Fair as the opening event of the first Fort Lauderdale area community festival. The competition areas were seafood cooking, posters, science projects, lesson plans and arts and crafts. In 1981, creative writing and photography became additional categories. In 1982, Cynthia and Lee combined the campus event and school marine fair concepts into kits for other educators to use in their communities. Their committee included co-founders Beverly Burris-Kennedy, Cynthia Hancock, Lee Kalvaitis, Tonya Koblick, Dr. George Lawniczak, John Morgan, Frank A. Raia, Nancy Tyrer Lawniczak and Sally Upstill.
School Marine Fair

Middle school science teacher Lee Kalvaitis designs Lee Kalvaitis and Cynthia Hancock begin sharing the Campus Event and School Marine Fair concept with other teachers across the U.S. as Week of the Ocean & Congressman E. Clay Shaw begin the drive for a National Week of the Ocean event. Lee Kalvaitis is named Woman of the Year in Education for Broward County for projects including the School Marine Fair concept by Women in Communications,Inc. Fame & Museum, according to co-chairs Lee Kalvaitis and Linda Irwin.
