LeAnn Simpson became executive director of WNPA in 2003, shortly after the name SPMA change.
She had served 11 years as executive director for the Glacier Natural History Association and had worked at the Custer Battlefield Historical and Museum Association before that.

During her first year, Simpson
devoted time reviewing accounts, records and operations at the trading post and concluded that "finance-related irregularities" were occurring at Hubbell and began to suspect Malone was involved in a forgery and embezzlement scheme.
