Lawrence Wilkes, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, became a Christian at age 20 and felt a definite call to ministry at that time.
He was ordained into the ministry by the North American Baptist Conference in 1965. Dr. Wilkes and his wife, Nancy, were married in July of 1970. Nancy, who is now retired, volunteers most of her time to numerous Southern California non- profit organizations. Their child, Christine is married and a teacher at a prominent Southern California Academy. Dr. Wilkes earned his Bachelor of Religious Education at Providence College and Theological Seminary; Bachelor of Arts in History at the University of Sioux Falls; Master of Divinity at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary; and Doctor of Philosophy at California Graduate School of Theology. Dr. Wilkes joined the staff at the Crystal Cathedral in 1991. In 1993, he accepted an appointment from Dr. Robert H. Schuller and was later named Dean of the Robert Schuller School for Preaching. He also served as the Evening Service preacher and Minister of Worship Hospitality for the Crystal Cathedral. In January of 1996, Dr. Wilkes became an ordained minister of the Reformed Church in America. His book, "He Walks Among Us", was released in April 1999. As Dean of the Robert Schuller School for Preaching, Dr. Wilkes developed a unique video library of over 3,500 video tapes of famous preachers. He was responsible for developing the Doctor of Ministry programs at the Robert Schuller School for Preaching with the United Theological Seminary of Trotwood, Ohio, with the George Fox University Evangelical Seminary of Portland, Oregon, and the California Graduate School of Theology in La Habra. He remained on staff with Crystal Cathedral Ministries until December 31, 2006. However, Lawrence continues ministry at the Cathedral as a minister on- call for weddings and funerals. Beginning in January 2007, Lawrence became part of the administrative staff at California Graduate School of Theology. As of 2008, Dr. Wilkes was appointed as Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program, which he continues to lead with great passion. BIOGRAPHY Dr. Lawrence Wilkes

Lawrence Wilkes earned his bachelor of religious education at Providence College in Otterburne, Manitoba in the 1960s before eventually obtaining a PhD from the California Graduate School of Theology.
Wilkes became interim pastor this past March. "I love it. I love this place," Wilkes says. "I'm the type that loves the classical style of worship with pipe organ, full choir, beautiful old hymns of the faith and that ambience of the Crystal Cathedral is just absolutely breathtaking. I love a Sunday morning here. It's just incredible." Wilkes first joined the staff at the Crystal Cathedral in 1991, serving as pastor in the church's evening service for 10 years as well as being a dean at the Robert Schuller School for Preaching. He left the church in 2009, but eagerly accepted the invitation to come back as interim pastor. "I love the people of the church," Wilkes says. Wilkes says that in spite of the church's troubles, Hour of Power remains popular, broadcasting in 11 countries around the world. He says there is no end date for his work at this point. Since the church has been dealing with a variety of other issues, hiring a successor has not been on the agenda. Wilkes says it is good to be back at the church though, and he never would have imagined when he was growing up in Winnipeg where his life would take him. "I never in my wildest dreams or nightmares would have thought I'd be in the situations I'm in today," Wilkes says with a laugh.

Lawrence Wilkes, who co-founded the school in 1974 along with Wesley Affleck and John Dyck, instigated the reinstatement of the school's charter - which was first granted by the provincial legislature in 1983, under the Okanagan Bible College Act.
After leaving OBC in 1986, Wilkes served on the pastoral staff of Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. When he retired from that post, he became graduate studies dean of California Graduate School of Theology (Cal Grad), a nondenominational school with informal links to the cathedral - the church made famous by its founding pastor, Robert Schuller, and his Hour of Power televised church service. Wilkes says the proposed doctoral and masters programs will be carried out with teaching mainly by Cal Grad faculty. Students will require only two weeks of residency in the Okanagan per year in the two year program, he says. Details of the residency locations and dates, known as 'intensives,' and other information about the programs, are at www.cangrad.ca. Wilkes says he believes these "new, practical approaches to education . . . will bring renewal [to] Canadian churches." Continue article >>
