Laurie Smukler is a dedicated and passionate teacher. In addition to her new appointment to the faculty of The Juilliard School, she is a respected member of the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music and the Conservatory of Music at Bard College. She also spent 18 years as a Professor of Violin and Chamber Music at Purchase College Conservatory of Music; ten as Head of the String Department. She has been on the Kneisel Hall faculty since 1997. Laurie Smukler also has a particular interest in contemporary music and has premiered works by many composers including Ned Rorem, Morton Subotnik, Steven Paulus, Shulamit Ran and Bruce Adolphe.

Ms. Smukler plays a Petrus Guarnerius violin made in Venice in 1738 and has recorded for Music Masters. She will be on campus the entire season.

LAURIE SMUKLER began her solo violin career at the age of fourteen, performing with the Cleveland Orchestra. As founding member and first violinist of the Mendelssohn String Quartet, in eight years she performed over 350 concerts throughout the country, coached chamber music and gave many master classes. Her recordings with the Quartet include works by Dvorak, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schoenberg, Weber and Ran. Since leaving the Quartet in 1987, she has been in demand as a guest artist with such groups as the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, Music From Marlboro and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. She is currently Professor of Violin and Head of the String Area at Purchase College, State University of New York, and will be at Kneisel Hall for the first four weeks of the season.

As a musician and teacher, Laurie Smukler has traveled across the country, educating students at conservatories and music schools such as the University of Michigan, Peabody Conservatory in Maryland and the University of Tennessee at Memphis.

Smukler, who was born in Ohio, lives in New York and is on the faculty of the prestigious music school The Juilliard School. She has taught at Purchase College Conservatory of Music and Bard College Conservatory of Music, both in New York. But for years she has worked in Maine, returning to Blue Hill each summer to teach at Kneisel Hall.
"There's very little extraneous, competitive, artificial influence [at Kneisel Hall]," Smukler said. "It's about creating music."
