Laurie Smukler LAURIE SMUKLER (violin) made her debut with the Cleveland Orchestra at the age of fourteen. A graduate of Juilliard, where she studied with Ivan Galamian, she was a founding member of the Mendelssohn String Quartet. Her chamber music performances have included appearances with Music from Marlboro, Chamber Music Northwest, the Mostly Mozart Festival, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Sea Cliff Chamber Players, and she has a long-term relationship with the Santa Fe Festival. She records with the Music Masters, Delos, and Musical Heritage labels. She is professor of violin and head of the string department at the Conservatory of Music, SUNY Purchase.

Violinist Laurie Smukler appears regularly at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Symphony Space and in performances with the Festival Chamber Music Society and the Bard Music Festival. She has premiered works by Ned Rorem, Morton Subotnick, Stephen Paulus, Shulamit Ran and Bruce Adolphe. She is professor of violin and head of the string area at the Conservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase, where she is also artistic director of the "Faculty and Friends" concert series.

LAURIE SMUKLER began her solo violin career at the age of fourteen, performing with the Cleveland Orchestra. As founding member and first violinist of the Mendelssohn String Quartet, in eight years she performed over 350 concerts throughout the country, coached chamber music and gave many master classes. Her recordings with the Quartet include works by Dvorak, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schoenberg, Weber and Ran. Since leaving the Quartet in 1987, she has been in demand as a guest artist with such groups as the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, Music From Marlboro and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. She is currently Professor of Violin and Head of the String Area at Purchase College, State University of New York, and will be at Kneisel Hall for the first four weeks of the season.

Violinist LAURIE SMUKLER is an active soloist and recitalist. Dedicated to teaching as well as performing, she is Professor of Violin and Head of the String Area at the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College (SUNY) as well as a member of the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music. Ms. Smukler was the founding first violinist of the Mendelssohn String Quartet. She has collaborated with many of the great artists of our time including Rudolph Serkin, Menahem Pressler, Richard Goode, Leon Fleischer, Michael Tree and the Vermeer and Emerson String Quartets. She is currently the first violinist of the Bard Festival String Quartet. Ms. Smukler's wide musical interests include contemporary music and she has premiered works by many composers, including Rorem, Subotnick and Paulus. She is active as Co-Artistic Director and performer in an exciting concert series entitled "The Collection in Concert" at the Pierpont Morgan Library and is also Artistic Director of the "Faculty and Friends" concerts at the Performing Arts Center of Purchase College. Ms. Smukler plays a Petrus Guarnerius violin made in 1738. She will be on campus the entire season.
With degrees from The Juilliard School, the Oberlin Conservatory, the Cleveland Institute of Music and Mannes College of Music, the iO Quartet has coached with George Sopkin, Laurie Smukler, Ira Weller, Calvin Wiersma and Julia Lichten.
