"The worse part of it is that it was so cold so we couldn't even put material down. so we were just plowing and keeping the roads open," said Laurie Peterson, the maintenance superintendent.
Peterson said the next few storms will give them a good indication of where they are in this year's budget. But, she said, the crews have to do what they have to do.

Two storms that dumped more than a foot of snow on Muskegon County last weekend forced plow drivers to focus on clearing highways and main roads, at the expense of less-traveled side roads and subdivisions, said Laurie Peterson, maintenance supervisor for the Muskegon County Road Commission.

"Because of the amount of snow we received the last few days, people waiting for their roads to be plowed were a little frustrated," Peterson said. "We tell people that we're going to get to all the roads as fast as we can; our mission is to do the best we can with the funding we have and keep the roads as safe as possible."
The Muskegon County Road Commissions plows 1,400 miles of roads, Peterson said. The state has cut 2 percent, or about $40,000, out of the road commission's $1.9 million budget.
As a result of the cuts, the road commission will wait until there is three inches of snow on the county's primary roads -- such as Whitehall, Heights-Ravenna or Maple Island -- before sending out the plows. The county's past practice of keeping interstates U.S. 31 and I-96 "generally bare of ice and snow" across their entire width remains in effect this year, Peterson said.
