Laurie Gibbons, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia, said the Cal Ripken S. Foundation is funding the partnership and "kids will be learning the Ripken way.
It includes teaching the children ranging from 1st thru the 12th grade life lessons, good relationships and teamwork that they will be able to carry with them throughout their life she said. Relationships that include law enforcement agencies and specifically the Roanoke City Police Department. Through the foundation grant proposal the Boys and Girls Club were able to fund the partnership. They will start with baseball playing at Morningside Park. Later in the year it will expand to soccer, lacrosse and football said Gibbons. Other locations to hold sporting programs is still in the works. "This is going to be an ongoing program," she said. "Next week we will be incorporating baseball into our programming and teaching them not only skills about baseball but also about teamwork, having a positive attitude and making sure they are following directions," said Gibbons.
