TBS co-president Larry
goes to his
favorite yoga retreat in the Bahamas last year and is standing in the azure blue Carribean when he
sees another guest, who looks Jewish. Now truth is, many Yoga Retreat guests are Jewish (one New Year's Eve there we took a poll and it was 9 out of 10 guests!) And another truth: this fellow in the Carribean with Larry
of his friend Roger Weiss, who is the husband of our temple office maven, Andrea.
...During the conversation with Roger's-look-alike Rick, Larry learns that Rick is indeed Jewish and Rick learns that Larry is president of a small Jewish congregation that has just acquired a new/old building.
Rick, who is an architect from Western Massachusetts, says: "I would like to find a new Ner Tamid for your temple."Now Larry
has heard ambitious promises of enlightenment at this Yoga Retreat but still, to hear about eternal light fixtures from someone he
has known for 15 minutes seems extraordinary.
Slow forward to last fall when Rick pays Larry
a surprise visit, has dinner with his look-alike Roger and our Andrea, photographs our sanctuary and then two months later calls with a donation offer of a fabulous one-of-a-kind, hand-blown Ner Tamid, whose monetary value is exactly equal to eighteen TBS family memberships!
It is hard to believe that it is spring and almost another year has passed since Larry
and I renewed our commitment as co-presidents.And what a year this has been!
Evie has appointed Laurie Frankino
to be in charge of getting bronze memorials on the wall of the sanctuary and when we get them, we will look like a temple that has been around for decades and is going to be around forever.
And speaking of books and Jewish writers, in April, Larry
attended the Books for a Better Life Award ceremony in NYC (we are judges for the awards) and sat next to Rabbi Harold Kushner.
Okay, so I am name-dropping , Larry
said Rabbi Kushner is quite a mensch.
will be there but alas, I will be in San Francisco, taking care of our youngest grandson, Abbot Meir Isaiah Terkel.
And to thank each of you for letting Larry
and me be so connected to this wonderful Jewish community.
