Lauren Griffin, senior vice president for the Boston office of temp firm Adecco, said demand remains high for "hot skills sets" such as engineering and technical positions. "It's at the point where I'd almost say there is actually a shortage of those areas," she said.

Lauren Griffin, a senior vice president at the Boston office of temp-staffing giant Addeco, said the manufacturing industry in particular has become more "project-based." "Businesses have a better handle than before on what they need and when," she said. "We just had a client that needed more people for a back-to-school project. They know what they need for labor for certain time, and then it goes away." Temporary staffing is also used to keep morale up for full-timers, Griffin said. "There have been so many cutbacks, it allows them to not feel as overwhelmed," she said.
