On the other hand, Laura Faulkner, a Human-Computer Interaction Specialist/Researcher for the University of Texas at Austin, discovered through her research conducted in 2003 that utilizing five user testers is not enough to gather sufficient data.
According to the results of her study, in which 60 people were present, when the test subjects were placed into groups of five, they found 55-85% of identifiable usability problems. The minimum percentage rose to 80% when the subjects were grouped in tens, and this percentage grew to 95% when the subjects were placed in groups of 20. Based on these figures, Faulkner reasoned that using 15 test subjects would allow for the optimum balance between costs and reliability, considering that that number of people would enable any test administrator to find 90-97% of usability problems.
