The story of Larry Hill
Larry Hill, a former Executive Director of Christ For the Nations Institute, has been in ministry for 39 years.
He has served as a missionary, a church planter, an international conference speaker and a visiting teacher in schools around the world.
Here is his
Emphasis on the World Vision
was raised in a Baptist home and became a true Christian in his
senior year of high school.
He started pursuing ministry when he was a student at Christ for the Nations Institute in 1974-1976.
The things he
encountered here â€"worship, teaching, strong missionary emphasis, meeting wonderful international students at CFNIâ€"have changed his
life in a powerful way.
After his CFNI
graduation (October 1976), Hill
went to Mexico City to join some other alumni serving there.
His experience in Mexico has allowed Hill to be a spokesman for the world missions.
The Sheets set Larry
and Joy up on a blind date.
Since that first meeting, they both had a feeling that they would get married.
After a year of long distance relationships, they were married.
describes Joy as “charming, real, very feminine, an extreme lover of God, intelligent, friendly and cheerful.
Hill served at CFNI for 15 years, and says that they were some of the best years of his life.
was in charge of all the summer outreaches, and would take a team on a mission trip every year.
started teaching such classes as First and Second Thessalonians, World Missions and Practical Preparation for Missions.
Working for CFNI, Hill recognized the need for training people called to cross-cultural ministry and initiated the School of Missions, which became the first third year program at the Institute.
An Unexpected Turn
Hill was the head of the School of Missions for four years when it began to feel like a new transition was coming.
The Hills were considering leaving CFNI
office, Joy turned to Larry
and said, “Would you leave the room?
stepped out, she
asked Dennis, “Have you ever thought that the man you need to lead the school was sitting right in front of you?
The Hills had never discussed this before, so what Joy did was completely unexpected to Larry
“I’ve always been a change agent and one of my greatest challenges as the director of CFNI
was building the new on the foundation and accomplishments of the past,
The Hills left CFNI
in 2004, and Larry
focused on finishing his
master’s program at DBU and started working with a business.
In February 2008 Joy was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
went to be with the Lord in February 2012.
The loss of his
wife Joy was a big trial for Larry
Speaking about dealing with grief, suffering, failure and mistakes, he
says, “I’ve realized that none of those things are enemies; in fact, they can become some of our best friends and great stepping stones to our future and destiny.
In January 2014, Hill
started ministering again on the international level, speaking at a number of conferences, churches and Bible schools.
