But the 35-bed facility named Sarah Leigh by the physician after the aunt who raised him was quite modern for its time, according to Larry DePriest, Sentara Leigh's administrator since 2001.
"It had an advanced surgery suite and a very good reputation," said DePriest
"We have a proud history," said DePriest
."We are certainly proud of today's technologies, which are miraculous when compared with 1903.But we are just as proud of the thing that hasn't changed - our mission of caring for people."
About 60 percent of the hospital's surgeries are performed outpatient in an ambulatory surgical center that has six ORs. About 40 percent of everything Leigh does is outpatient, said DePriest
"Many of those outpatient services didn't exist in the '70s," he
said, "so now we are working on renovations and expansions to accommodate those services."
