, DO is the newly-appointed Medical Director, Geriatrics and Life Long Health, Riverside Health System, a five hospital integrated health system headquartered in Newport News, VA.
is nationally-renown thought leader, clinical practitioner and educator in the development and management of high-value post-acute programs within integrated health systems.
A highly sought after advisor, speaker and author, Dr. Allen serves on several national advisory boards, including the Practice Change Fellows Program, a national leadership development program for leaders in the field of geriatrics and post-acute care after having successfully completed the fellowship himself.
He has been the principle investigator for several federally funded clinical trials in his area of research interest: chronic illness care management and transitional care.
has made presentations before several professional societies, CMS, AHRQ and numerous national and state-level committees and health policy forums on a broad range of post-acute innovations involving health systems, managed care plans and state Medicaid and dual-eligible programs.
Prior to joining Riverside Health System, Dr. Allen was the Medical Director, Post Acute/Senior Services and Chief, Division of Geriatric Medicine at Summa Health System (SHS), an integrated health system located in Akron, OH. Among his responsibilities, Dr. Allen was Medical Director of Enhanced Care Management, an integrated set of post-acute care management programs for medically complex Medicare Advantage enrollees.
Created in collaboration with SummaCare, the health plan of Summa, these programs addressed both bio-medical and psycho-social needs, achieving national recognition for enhancements to quality and access, with simultaneous reductions to cost and utilization.
Also while with Summa, Dr. Allen served as Program Director of the SHS Geriatric Medicine Fellowship program and held the position of Professor of Internal and Family Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University (previously known as Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine).
Dr. Allen is a graduate of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a fellowship in geriatric medicine at University of Cincinnati.
He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) and holds a CAQ in Geriatric Medicine from the ABFM.
