Mr Kwarteng, who is a member of Parliament's Finance Committee, mentioned, for instance, that another strategy by government to stop paying state institutions that are generating enough Internally Generated Funds (IFGs) is a laudable idea that can cut down public sector spending. "It's one of those policies that if government will push even some of us in opposition will support," he said. The country's total debt stock now stands at GHc99 billion, representing a little over 70% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Most of the debt has come from Eurobond issues and the domestic market. Mr. Kwaku Kwarteng, the Member of Parliament for Obuasi West told this reporter via phone yesterday that the claim of transpositional error was bogus explanation.
According to him, it is impossible for an error to occur when copying documents from an excel programme to word and that the claim of the NCA does not hold water. Hon. Kwarteng further told this reporter that he had been using excel since his secondary school days and had never encountered such a problem and that if anything at all, it is the formatting that would change and not the document itself.

He said these monies are used by the regions in preparing for the President's visit in terms of logistic, acquisitions among others. According to him, this practice of extracting monies from the district assemblies has provided festering grounds for corruption to thrive in the country. Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show held at Alisa Hotel, Mr. Kwarteng said corruption can be eliminated if the leadership of the country shows the willingness. "We are always going to need a leader who is going to be an example", he said. Mr. Kwarteng said "we need strong institutions and we need a leader who is tough" to walk the country out of corruption. In his response to President Mahama's claims that he is fighting corruption vigorously, the MP said the President has "no appetite to punish many of those people involved in corruption."
