In 1989 Cadet Kristin Baker became the first woman to be selected Brigade Commander and First Captain of the West Point Corps of Cadets. (Her male predecessors in that position have included Robert E. Lee, John J. Pershing and Douglas MacArthur.) [If she stays in the Service, she will surely end up a high ranking general.
In July 2006, Kristin
was promoted to Lt.
Colonel.] The first captain, as she
is informally called, oversees all aspects of life for 4,400 cadets: marching them through drills, supervising parades and managing a support staff of 40 upperclassmen, all while carrying a regular course load.
