"We really are seeing that, this past spring in the bachelor's program, 54 percent of the students are 25 to 29 (years old) and 35 percent are 40 to 64, so only just under 11 percent are in the traditional 18-to-24 age group," said Kristen Zimmerman, dean of bachelor's degree programs at Edison State College in Lee County. "That's pretty telling."

Zimmerman said many factors are coming into play. Many working registered nurses want their bachelor's in nursing to be more marketable or to advance their careers. Southwest Florida hospitals are aiming for the majority of its nursing staff to have the bachelor's degree, she said.

Edison College churns out more than 600 nurses a year - more than any other school in the state, Zimmerman said.
Prospective nurses need only a two-year degree to take the licensure exams but health care organizations are starting to demand four-year degrees, Zimmerman said.
In Southwest Florida's five-county area, 1,741 hospital-based nurses lack the bachelor's degree, said Zimmerman, quoting statistics from the Agency for Workforce Innovation.
Edison's new program will allow registered nurses to complete their bachelor's degrees. It adds training in areas such as critical thinking, pharmacology and community health.
"The way that patient care is approached is changing.Adding this level of education and training is really required," Zimmerman said.
