Algonquin senior Korey Dropkin is the skipper for his High Performance team, which will defend its title in the Junior National Curling Competition starting Saturday.

Southborough's Korey Dropkin is hoping for a home ice advantage when his High Performance team defends its title in the upcoming 2013 Junior National Curling Competition at the Broomstones Curling Club in Wayland.
Broomstones is where Dropkin, a 17-year old senior at Algonquin Regional, has been practicing several times a week since early in the fall in preparation for this tournament. He has been training there for many years.
"This will be different for me," said Dropkin. "The three other nationals have been in been in Bemidji, Minnesota, Alaska and Madison, Wisconsin, all away from home. Everyone is rooting against you. Now it's kind of cool to get an opportunity to be the home team and have everyone cheer for you."
Dropkin is the skipper for a High Performance team that includes a player from New Jersey, two from Minnesota and his high school classmate Connor Hoge, who's also from Southborough.
...
"My family taught Connor how to curl," said Dropkin, who started curling when he was 5 years old.
...
"It going to be great," said Dropkin. "It's one the athletes have been looking forward to and practicing all season for starting in September and October."
Dropkin's team won the 2012 National Championship in Madison, Wisconsin and went on to place fifth at both Junior Worlds and at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. For leading High Performance, Dropkin was named the 2012 Male Curler of the Year. At 17, he is the youngest curler to earn the award.
"I did not know the award even existed," said Dropkin.
If skipper Dropkin leads his team to a successful defense of its national title, High Performance becomes Team USA and will represent the country later this winter in the Junior Curling Worlds at the Olympic venue in Sochi, Russia, the host site for the 2014 Winter Games.
"Going to Sochi would be pretty cool," said Dropkin, who has Olympic aspirations for 2018 and beyond.
