Kirsten Atkinson, executive director of the Mediation Center, said the meetings can be emotional. She works to build trust with the family, a first step toward a cooperative relationship. Instead of focusing on the problems, social workers explore a family's strengths, such as loving relationships.DSS helps families develop ways of making sure children are fed, clothed and given an environment where they can benefit from going to school. The agency wants people to know about the new approach so they'll be less scared of social workers.I asked to meet with a family, but DSS rules prohibit staffers from setting up such a meeting. So Ms. Atkinson and some DSS employees briefed me last week about how they've handed some cases.A word here: We're not talking about Leave It to Beaver kinds of homes.
