SBC says "fiber is an unproven technology" | Technology Futures

SBC's Midwest Networking President, Kirk Brannock (currently serving on the Illinois Governor's Broadband Deployment Council) is getting his fifteen minutes of fame. He was captured on video at a public hearing stating that "fiber is an unproven technology."
It is an interesting assertion since SBC's networks would collapse without the tens of thousands of miles of fiber the company uses to run their entire phone and data system.
In the same video, Brannock arrogantly states that, "...what are you going to do with 20 megabits? Um, the same things the Japanese, the Australians, the Chinese, the Candadians, and the Irish are doing with 100 megabit connections--just five times more slowly.
He keeps going though, and says that of their trial of 3 meg fiber in Milwaukee, "...most users won't use that."
The condescension of this guy is almost beyond belief. At one point, he talks about the "Dr.

"Knowing that the dial tone will be there when you pick up the phone is vital - especially in extreme weather conditions," said Kirk Brannock, president of network operations, SBC Midwest."Our network is very reliable - 99.93 percent of the time when you pick up the phone, you'll get that reassuring sound - the dial tone."
In Wisconsin, more than 1,023 technicians work outside on a daily basis, working in trenches to lay new cable, climbing poles to repair service after storms and working in manholes, splicing cable that may have been damaged by inclement weather.
"I can't say enough about our dedicated employees - especially our service technicians, who work in the snow or cold, rain or shine, to provide outstanding service," said Brannock.

"Most people don't realize that our communications network is dependent upon electricity," continued Brannock.
Local phone carriers get grief from consumers

The company has brought in 50 Southwestern Bell technicians from as far away as Kansas for the month of July to work on its backlog, said Kirk Brannock, Ameritech's vice president of customer provisioning and maintenance.
Ameritech is trying to hire and train another 250 technicians, Brannock said.It is holding job fairs and has lowered standards for screening new employees in an effort to find people who can be trained to install phones.
In addition to facing a generally tight job market, Ameritech has seen a surprising number of experienced technicians take their retirement packages and leave.
A ton of people have left and are now working for our competitors, collecting their Ameritech pensions, said Brannock.
Meantime, AT&T has slowly been rolling out local phone service over its cable television systems in selected suburbs north and northwest of Chicago.
