Cabarrus County has been challenged by Rowan County in the 2002 Relay For Life, said Kim Roe, co-chairperson of Cabarrus County's campaign.
In a unprecedented move, the American Cancer Society
will present an award to the winning county.
The challenge is to see which county can have the biggest percentage increases in the amount of money raised and the number of teams participating.
Relay For Life is an overnight event that raises money for the American Cancer Society
, the largest private funder of cancer research in the country.
The idea is to have fun while raising money to fight cancer, Roe
said. With this in mind, the day is also filled with music, food, contests, awards and prizes.
Cancer survivors will open the relay with the Survivor's Lap, that symbolizes the courage survivors and their families display and sustain in their lives.
Loved ones can also be honored through the luminary ceremony, where lighted luminaries are displayed to spell out the word "hope."
"The counties are finally realizing this is a big event," Roe
Most of the money raised will go back into the community that raised it, and the American Cancer Society
even has an office at Cabarrus County's local hospital, NorthEast Medical Center
This year, organizers hope to involve schools in Cabarrus County and Kannapolis. They are organizing "Change for a Cure," in which students are asked to fill film canisters with quarters to help raise money.
"It's a great way to get the community involved," Roe
