Khaled A. Tawansy, M.D. is a world-renowned vitreo-retinal surgeon and an assistant professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics. He directs a busy clinical practice in Southern California dedicated to the management of complicated pediatric and adult retinal disorders, including retinopathy of prematurity, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, trauma, uveitis, macular degeneration, and hereditary vitreo-retinopathies.
Dr. Tawansy completed a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering with Tau Beta Pi Honors at Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate of medicine at the University of Michigan. He completed residencies in internal medicine at the University of California and in ophthalmology at Henry Ford Hospital. He subsequently performed fellowship training in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery at the University of British Columbia, Retinal Pathophysiology and Macular Diseases at Vanderbilt University, Ocular Ultrasound and Trauma Research at the Schepens Retina Foundation, and Pediatric Retinal Diseases and Uveitis at Harvard Medical School. During his training, he founded and directed pediatric retinal programs at Vanderbilt and UBC.
After leading the pediatric retina service at University of Southern California for five years, he founded Children's Retina Institute and Arroyo Vision Care in order to advance clinical management, teaching, and research for complicated retinal diseases. He pioneered surgical techniques for Retinal Detachment associated with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), Chorio-Retinal Coloboma, Stickler Syndrome, Proliferative Vitreo-Retinopathy, Familial Exudative Vitreo-Retinopathy, Microphthalmos, and Bullous Juvenile Retinoschisis.
As an authority in mechanism of retinal hemorrhage in children, he serves nationally as an expert witness in cases of potential child abuse. He directs the Ocular Trauma Service and Pediatric Eye Program at several major California hospitals, and has performed over 10,000 vitrectomy and scleral buckle procedures. He is a founding member of the American Pediatric Retina Society and a fellow of the European Retina Society. He has received a Senior Fellow Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Surgeons and a Shine Award from Ronald McDonald House Charities. He has also been selected as one of America's Top Ophthalmologists and California Patients' Choice Physicians.
Dr. Tawansy's enthusiasm for global eye care has led to the development of a unique center for Surgery and Education at the historic Raymond Theater, which accepts referrals of challenging patients from all over the world. He is also president of Golden State Eye Care, which serves patients from throughout the Conejo Valley. He has trained fellows from six continents, started the ROP screening and surgery program in Northern Mexico, and collaborates with a sister program at Vydehi Medical School in Bangalor. He also developed One Retina, the first Veterinary Retinal Surgery Program in California.
Dr. Tawansy enjoys spending time with his family. If he is not in clinic or the operating room, you will likely find him swimming, cycling, or hiking around the Rose Bowl, body surfing at Malibu or Laguna Beach, or swinging at a local Jazz or Rock club.

"I definitely think the incidence is higher," reports Khaled Tawansy, director of pediatric retina surgery at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the University of Southern California.

...
"The process of retinal blood vessel growth is programmed to occur in utero in a relatively hypoxic, or oxygen poor, environment," says Tawansy.
...
"We do surgery for stage 5 ROP routinely," Tawansy says."At USC - Doheny Retina Institute, we have developed special instruments that are 25 gauge that are more appropriate to the size of the child's eye. This allows us to enter the eye and remove the abnormal vasculature from the eye in order to relax the retina so it can return to its normal position. We can either drain the fluid that is underneath the retina to attach it or we can let it reabsorb."
Tawansy reports a success rate for anatomic reattachment - ranging from 45%-50% for stage 5 detachments and up to 92% for a 4a detachment.
