Taunton Town chairman and head groundsman Kevin Sturmey has received national recognition after being highly commended in the FA Groundsman Of The Year awards.
Taunton were the only team nominated from the South and West Division of the Evo-Stik League, with the pitch being inspected in March by the head groundsmen of Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.
Sturmey who combines various responsibilities at the club, took on the groundsman role to make savings last September following the departure of Barry Holder and has overseen a vast improvement in the playing surface which had begun at the end of the previous season.
Sturmey added: "It has been a team effort to improve the pitch and I am indebted to my assistant Chris Mayhew who contributes a huge amount in many areas.

The appointment of Robinson, who beat off several other high-calibre candidates for the role, was also welcomed by club chairman Kevin Sturmey.
Sturmey continued: "We will be spending as much time as it takes to formulate plans to create a successful structure and fine tune our draft four year football plan as soon as possible.
Chairman Kevin Sturmey commented:" We decided quite some time ago that we wished to stay at Wordsworth Drive and carry out ground improvements as and when finances allowed. The clubhouse fire obviously forced the issue and work will now thankfully begin very shortly on our new temporary facility." The insurance policy inherited by the new board was grossly inadequate, resulting in a considerable shortfall in funds with which to rebuild. The club have consequently been investigating grants and funding from various bodies; however they have been restricted by the existence of the option agreement which made them ineligible for major funding. Sturmey said:" Without a new clubhouse and the income stream it would generate, our ambition to climb the non-league system would have been a non-starter and we would have undoubtedly had to consider the viability of remaining in the Southern League.
Sturmey continued:" The new clubhouse will contain a bar, skittle alley and toilets and there will also be another building for use as a boardroom and a sponsors' hospitality suite.
Club chairman Kevin Sturmey commented:" This decision was one of the most difficult the board have ever had to make and was not taken lightly.
Club chairman Kevin Sturmey also reviewed the season, acknowledging the hard year the club have faced off the pitch since the clubhouse fire and the disappointing campaign on it, but also reflecting on the progress made with the youth policy and the playing surface.

Chairman Kevin Sturmey said:" I'm pleased to say we raised even more money this year than last year when we first had a collection for the Childrens' Ward. Hopefully the gifts helped cheer up the children who unfortunately had to spend Christmas in hospital."
