The Desert Line "certainly has long-term potential," said Kevin Arner, director of trade development for the maritime division at the San Diego Unified Port District. For now, though, freight service over the Desert Line "is not at a level we can sell," Arner said. Customers require a "prompt, seamless connection to the east," Arner said. Several factors, ranging from international border crossings to old infrastructure to competition among the railroad industry's 800-pound gorillas, may make the connection less than prompt and seamless, he said.

"A series of 11 shipments from Nagasaki, Japan, carrying a total of 170 sets of rotors and engines for windmills, began arriving in July and will continue through November," Arner said, adding that the parts are then trucked to New Mexico and Iowa for the construction of wind farms.
