School Band Director Kevin Kardel is also the conductor of the military band.
The school concert with the military band is something Kardel
has been working on for a while.
"I've been trying to coordinate this for four years," Kardel
said in a statement released through the School Department.
...Kardel has been a member of the 215th Army National Guard Band for 12 years.Like John T. Yunits Sr., he joined as a trombone player and later became the conductor.Kardel has been a music teacher with the Brockton public schools since 1997, according to the School Department.
The band director's service in the National Guard
helped pay for his
schooling and allowed Kardel
to continue his
music career, something he
students will also consider.
"We want to encourage the students to continue their musical training and help them find opportunities to do that," Kardel
said through the School Department."A lot of them finish their last concert in their senior year of high school and they never pick up their instruments again."
The 215th Massachusetts Army National Guard Band tours American and foreign bases one weekend a month and two weeks each summer entertaining the troops while active bands are on vacation. The group also serves an important patriotic function: they are on hand to send off and welcome home many of the local troops who are deployed to and returning from service in the Middle East.
"For many of the local troops, we are playing our music when they step on the plane on their way toward active duty, and we are there playing when they step off the plane when their tour is up," Kardel
