Michael was previously a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2003-2007), where he earned his Ph.D. in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering.

While attending Baylor University, he was a Research Assistant for the University's Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics & Engineering Research (2002-2003).
