The great thing about the release of this dataset is that it is immediately useable," said Dr. Kenneth McNally, senior scientist in IRRI's T.T. Chang Genetic Resources Center and a project team member.

Ruaraidh Sackville-Hamilton and Dr. Kenneth McNally
From a panoramic view, trees in a forest look pretty much the same and it's hard to tell the difference between individuals. But walking in the forest, one can clearly distinguish the various shapes and sizes of the individual trees. Looking even closer, on a molecular level, scientists can check DNA to further identify similarities and differences. IRRI scientists Dr. Ruaraidh Sackville Hamilton and Dr. Kenneth McNally along with their colleagues have looked at this technology as it applies to rice in their paper "Genomics of genebanks: a case study in rice".

"We are hunting for snippets of DNA, called single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs, that distinguish these rice," says Dr. Ken McNally from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).
