...Mr. Kenneth H. Dufrane - Nuclear & Mechanical Engineering, Waste & Licensing
...Mr. Dufrane (prefers Ken) has over 20 years of experience in the production and processing of radioactive waste.
This includes the operation and licensing of waste disposal sites, as well as the transportation of waste to these sites and the licensing, design, and fabrication of shielded shipping casks. These activities include both rail and truck casks and shipments.
RADIOACTIVE WASTE STORAGE; RADIATION SHIELDS; CONTAINER DESIGN PROCESS.Ken
conceived a modular, temporary storage concept for low-level radioactive waste in the early '80's and successfully brought this to the marketplace. He
has designed and fabricated a large variety of containers with volumes from 10 to 2300 cubic feet, with shielding equivalents of over five inches of lead.He
also designs, develops, and fabricates a wide variety of standard and special shielding to reduce radiation levels for both gamma and neutron sources, including steel, lead, concrete, water, composites, and windows.
NUCLEAR WASTE DISPOSAL; NUCLEAR WASTE MANAGEMENT.As the Regional Director and Vice President of Chem-Nuclear Systems for nine years, Ken
was directly involved with the operation of their Barnwell, S.C. disposal site, as well as related licensing, transportation, and design areas. He
has also been directly involved in the evaluation of waste production, minimization and associated processing, and handling techniques. He
has had the engineering and fabrication responsibility for a variety of waste processing equipment for waste solidification, demineralization, and incineration.
NUCLEAR REACTORS; PRESSURIZED WATER REACTORS.Ken
has worked on a variety of pressurized water, liquid metal, and fused salt reactors, including both the areas of reactor design and overall system evaluations. He
was responsible for the mechanical design of two reactors, including nuclear fuel, core, pressure vessel, control rod drives, and refueling equipment.
SPENT FUEL.Ken was Engineering Manager at a spent fuel reprocessing facility. He
was responsible for fuel receiving and unloading, transportation, shipping cask design and fabrication, and associated licensing activities. He developed the technology for minimizing radioactive contamination of transport equipment, and headed the Emergency Planning Team.
