Ken served 18 years with CMPD in a variety of assignments, including uniform patrol, plain-clothes street crimes unit, field training officer, lake enforcement, and investigations.His last assignment was in the organized crime and intelligence unit.His awards include the FBI Director's Award for Outstanding Counterterrorism Investigation, a special recognition from the U.S. Attorney General for his work in the first successful prosecution of a material support to terrorism case, and the CMPD Medal of Valor for actions related to a shootout with an armed robbery suspect.
Ken is also a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve where he has served for 26 years, serving from Private to his current rank of Colonel in the armor and military police fields.He has been activated and deployed twice since 9/11 to include time at U.S. Central Command and in Iraq, where in 2005 he was the coordinator of the Iraqi Border Police in the Anbar and Najaf Provinces along the Saudi Arabian, Jordanian, and Syrian borders.He has worked with police and military forces in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and the Middle East.Some of his military awards include the Bronze Star, Navy/MC Commendation Medal, Navy/MC Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, Korean Defense Service Medal.
Ken is a 1986 graduate of the University of Louisville with a B.S. in Police Administration and he holds a current Top Secret/SCI security clearance.

To fill the role of Police Chief, the City announced it has promoted Deputy Police Chief Kenneth DeSimone. DeSimone came to Sandy Springs from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. DeSimone has a B.S. Degree in Police Administration from the University of Louisville. He is a graduate of the National FBI Academy and USMC Command and Staff College. He received the 1999 Police Medal of Valor from Charlotte Mecklenburg Police and the 2003 FBI Director's Award for Outstanding Counterterrorism Investigation.
