Ken Wilson, a Boulder City Councilman, is among the third-age wave on the CU campus.
In 2005, he began volunteering in a microbiology lab at the university, a move that came after retiring from AT&T Bell Labs and starting his own consulting business in telecommunications. This fall he enrolled in a graduate program through CU's Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department and is working on a project funded by the National Science Foundation to culture fungi from alpine soils. Wilson, 57, is among about 125 graduate students on the Boulder campus who are 55 years or older. He said he believes that students in his generation bring a valuable diversity to the college campus. "It isn't easy to start over in a new field, learning the basics and building up a new knowledge base," Wilson said.

Ken WilsonAs a lifelong Guilford resident and volunteer firefighter for 22 years, GOP candidate Ken Wilson said he hopes to take a further step in public service by becoming first selectman.Wilson, 55, said that he has felt a "very favorable" response while campaigning."I've been always about giving back to the town that I call home and this is an opportunity for me to give back to my fullest extent," he said.Wilson retired as a senior manager at AT&T in June after a 26-year career. He said he would bring a business mentality to the operation of town government."I'm an active leader; I'm a leader that has been successful; I'm a leader that understands the nuances of business," he said."I can bring business practices and principles to the table that I've used that have been successful."He added that, if elected, he would like to eliminate what he called the "fiscal irresponsibility" of the current town government, reducing the amount of annual budget increases and trying to not raise taxes."When I left AT&T, I was managing over a $70 million budget and the town's budget is approximately $71 million, and in my view it's time to pay closer attention to our fiscal practices," he said. One of his goals would be to implement an asset replacement plan for town departments that have equipment, such as lawn mowers and snowplows, that has to be replaced periodically. He is also in favor of continuing to acquire and preserve open space to "protect and nurture our small town atmosphere."Wilson served on the Parks and Recreation Commission from 2003 to 2004 and is vice chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners. He is also active on the Republican Town Committee. He graduated from Guilford High School in 1970 and has a liberal arts degree and a bachelor's in business management from Albertus Magnus College. He and his wife, Ginny, have been married for 26 years and they have a daughter and son.
