Anne Arundel Community College men's soccer coach Ken Wolf has had his beard almost as long as he has coached at the school - 33 years.
But thanks to a deal made with his
players, he'll soon need some aftershave.
In a 1-1 overtime decision decided on penalty kicks, the Pioneers advanced to the NJCAA National Semifinals in Herkimer, N.Y., on Benito Barbosa's game winning kick, defeating County College of Morris (N.J.) at AACC's Siegert Stadium.
"I had the players over for dinner this week, and they joked that if we advanced to nationals, I should shave off my beard," said Wolf
"I assumed it would come down to penalty shots," said Wolf
, "These regional and national match-ups are usually played pretty evenly."
The win gave the Pioneers the NJCAA Division III District IV title, and advanced the team to the national semifinals for the first time since 1995.At that time eight teams advanced instead of the now established four-team championship.
Next Saturday the Pioneers will face either No. 1 seed and host Herkimer, or No. 2 Richland (Texas), with the winner advancing to next Sunday's title game.
"This win belongs to all of the players I have coached over the years," said Wolf
, who was still shaking from a Gatorade shower given to him by Matthew Conlon and Patrick McGuire.
"At that point I just wanted the time to expire, and to give positive reinforcement to my team," said Wolf
