Judge Kawaichi, who has served more than 22 years on the Alameda Superior Court Bench, is now a mediator and arbitrator with JAMS.The judge is well known for trying to bring parties together for settlement and working closely with attorneys to efficiently manage cases. Judge Kawaichi is the fifth neutral to join JAMS in Northern California during the past twelve months.Governor Jerry Brown appointed Judge Kawaichi to the Oakland-Piedmont-Emeryville Municipal Court in October of 1975.Prior to his service on the bench, Judge Kawaichi was in private practice as a partner with Yonemura, Yasaki and Kawaichi in Oakland from 1969 to 1975.Before becoming a partner, he practiced with the firm for two years. A leader in several legal and community organizations, Judge Kawaichi was president of the California-Asian Judges Association from 1986 to 1987 and president of the Piedmont Asian American Club in 1988. He has been an active member of the California Judges Association, the American Trial Lawyers Association, the California Trial Lawyers Association, the Asian Law Caucus, the American Judicature Society, the National Judicial College Faculty Council, the Mass Torts Litigation Committee (MTLC), and the California Judicial Council (Committees: Civil and Small Claims, Task Force on Complex Litigation, Race and Ethnic Bias, Access and Fairness). Judge Kawaichi was a member of the Board of Directors of the Alameda County Legal Aid Society in 1977.From 1967 to 1975, he was a member of the Alameda County Bar Association and the American Bar Association. In conjunction with many of his professional activities, Judge Kawaichi has lectured and presented on a variety of legal subjects throughout the world including in California, Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Texas, Washington, China, Mexico, Micronesia and Russia. His community activities have included serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Lyon Project, East Bay, in 1974, Board of Directors of the Easter Seal Society in Alameda County in 1974, East Bay Board of Directors of the International Institute in 1971, Japanese-American Citizens League, New Oakland Committee, Piedmont Choirs Board of Directors, Cub Scouts and University of California, Berkeley Chancellor's Advisory Committee.He was also Chairman of the Alameda-Contra Costa County Health Systems Agency Governing Body. Judge Kawaichi earned an LL.B. from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley in 1966.He received his A.B. from Pomona College in Claremont, California in 1963.
