Georgette Braun: Ken DeCoster a good choice for Rockford crime job ... Georgette Braun: Ken DeCoster a good choice for Rockford crime job • Ken DeCoster hired as WREX reporter • My View: Rockford radio voice needs to return > Social News For 33 years, journalist Ken DeCoster followed police for leads about criminal activity to tell radio listeners and TV viewers. Starting Monday, hell do an about-face of sorts. Hell lead a group that cops look to for crime-fighting information, the one that pays money to tipsters who remain anonymous. DeCoster is the new coordinator of Rockford Area Crime Stoppers, replacing Rich Gambini, a longtime police officer who retired last month. For sure, DeCoster is a respected communicator, with long-standing community connections. Ive admired his abilities to get sources to give him breaking-story leads. It seems DeCoster just cant stay away from the crime world. For example, he was posting items about cops news on his personal Facebook page after his talk-show host job was cut at NTA when the station changed formats a year ago. And last week when a warehouse on 19th Avenue burned down in frigid temperatures, he was posting photos he took on Facebook. Police suspect the building was a pot-growing operation. DeCosters last day as a multimedia journalist at WREX was Jan. 2. He started his news career in 1981 in Rockford and then covered Winnebago County. Christiansen said DeCoster will spend some of his time as executive assistant to the sheriff in getting the word out about county activities, including economic development wins. DeCoster is a county employee; the county and the city of Rockford split paying his $60,000 salary. Hopefully, people who would not be otherwise motivated to report crimes will be motivated to provide information to police anonymously through Crime Stoppers, DeCoster said. Money talks, he said.
