...Fourth-semester nursing student Kelly Howard is well known among fellow students as the president of the Henderson Association of Nursing Students (HANS), but few are aware of just exactly how much she has contributed to the program.
nursing school career, Kelly
has been actively involved in both the state and local nursing student associations, as well as in her
program as class liaison for the May
97 graduating class. During the 95-96 school year, Kelly was vice president of HANS.
While in this position, she
worked with then president Robin Tafoya to recruit new members into the organization, increasing the HANS membership number from 14 to over 70."Our increase in memberships was recognized at the state convention in Lexington.HANS
won an award for it, which is very exciting," stated Howard
.As vice president, Howard also helped to organize the welcoming luncheon for new nursing students.
The luncheon provided the students with information regarding the nursing program and HANS
.Kelly was elected to the position of Western Regional Director of the Kentucky Association of Nursing Students (KANS) in February of last year. As western regional director, Howard has recruited a number of schools from the western region of Kentucky into KANS.
"I would report to KANS what the nursing associations of each school was doing," said Howard
."I also met monthly with other officers of KANS to help plan and organize the annual state convention that was held on Feb. 7 and 8 in Lexington."As class liaison, Kelly meets monthly with Dr. Mary Gail Wilder, nursing program coordinator, to voice any concerns students may have regarding skills tests, classes or instructors.

received the George Hoffman scholarship, KANS scholarship, and membership to both WhoÕs Who Among Students in Junior Colleges and the Judiciary Board.
As graduation draws near, Kelly
already is beginning to plan for her
future."Right now I just want to pass my boards and start working towards my bachelor degree."Kelly
has recently enrolled in USIÕs BSN program.She
begins classes this summer.
