Keith Karn
Director of User Research & Human Factors Keith has been steeped in human-centered design since strapping himself into the ejection seat of a supersonic airplane during his first human factors job in the early '80s. Since then he has trekked down mountains and trailed ER docs, all in the pursuit of user research. Before coming to Bresslergroup, he led user research and design teams at Xerox and Eastman Kodak, whose human factors department was one of the first in American industry. He has also designed for healthcare, including medical information systems and medical devices, and has extensive experience leading usability testing to meet the requirements of the FDA and European governing bodies. Keith interprets design as finding solutions that balance the competing and sometimes contradictory needs of users. At Bresslergroup, he leads contextual inquiry and usability testing, adding the rigor required to create successful user interfaces and intuitive product experiences. He also led Bresslergroup's interaction design team before moving into his current role. He speaks and publishes frequently on usability evaluation methods, improving customer acceptance through user-centered product design, and user interface design for emerging technologies. He earned his PhD in Experimental Psychology at the University of Rochester and degrees in Ergonomics and Industrial Engineering at North Carolina State University and Penn State. He taught human factors and human-computer interaction for many years at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Rochester. Keith S. Karn, PhD, Presents at HFES 2015
Facilitating a user research session can be a juggling act involving many competing considerations, even without the added pressure of accurately capturing the experience for later analysis. Keith S. Karn, PhD, Bresslergroup's Director of User Research and Human Factors, organized and moderated a session called "Capturing Data During User Research" to address these concerns at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, held in Los Angeles from October 26-30. At HFES 2015, Karn also participated in the panel, "Challenges in Supporting the Design of Products for Healthcare: The Human Factors Consultant's Perspective," moderated by Dick Horst of UserWorks, Inc.

2. "What's New in Human Factors for Medical Devices" by Keith S. Karn, PhD
Keith Karn, our Director of User Research & Human Factors, wrote this post about attending the 2015 International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Healthcare. He noticed an uptick over previous years in the number of discussions about user interface design, especially in the context of smart devices. 5. "Designing Handheld Devices That Don't Hurt" by Keith S. Karn, PhD That's because product designers "frequently hit a wall when designing for the hand," as Keith explains, because of a lack of relevant data to guide thumb-safe product development. Anthropometry's generic offerings are less than useful when addressing specific design challenges with unique constraints. This tension between basic and applied sciences is common in other disciplines as well." He encourages designers to create and execute their own studies that are specific to the devices they're developing. Keith talks readers through a study he and his team designed when they needed better data to design a pocket video camera. Five Steps To Usable Product Design By Keith S.
