Crookston, MN (2014) - North Country Food Bank, Inc.'s search for land to build a new facility is over - thanks to the good deed of Keith Danks, Jr., of Equity Management Co., a local real estate development company.
After hearing of North Country's need for a larger facility, Danks offered to donate approximately 6 acres of land along North Broadway to give the Food Bank a place to build. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Danks, we will now be able to start the planning process. After they opened a bank account in town, the building's owner, Keith Danks, Jr. of Equity Management, Inc. of Grand Forks, took the pair to other stops around town, like an attorney's office to sign the lease and form a limited liability corporation together.
They also opened a charge account at Hardware Hank and went to Northern Lumber to order supplies. By 4 p.m. portions of the floor and ceiling in the former pizza restaurant were being torn out and a truck was unloading stacks of sheetrock.     The restaurant will be open seven days a week, and the pair say it will have a full bar and they'll specialize in margaritas. Danks said they chatted informally with officials at city hall earlier Monday and he said he didn't anticipate any major issues  arising regarding the pursuit of a liquor license. Danks and his son, Cody, traveled to Baxter on Tuesday to eat at Martinez's El Tequila Mexican restaurant. Keith had the steak ranchero and Cody had chimichangas. The portions were so big neither said they could finish.     "It was excellent," Keith said. he said, motioning to Danks.     Without making major renovations, Danks said the pair will replace the roof with a terra-cotta look, and the inside will have lots of stucco to give it a Mexican feel.

Danks seeks variance to construct second strip mall
The city Planning Commission Tuesday evening will consider a request for a setback variance that would allow Keith Danks, Jr. to construct a second strip mall immediately south of the first one on University Avenue that's currently anchored by Anytime Fitness.     Danks, of Equity Management in Grand Forks, said previously that he'd build a second retail center once the first one was substantially leased. Along with Anytime Fitness, Hong's Chinese Restaurant is expected to open later this summer, and Danks said in May that he was finalizing a lease with a third tenant that would occupy the suite between the fitness center and restaurant, which would fill the  building to capacity.     Several weeks ago, the site to the south was cleared by heavy equipment in preparation for the construction of a second building, which Danks said would likely look a lot like the first one.
