Kees Tjeenk Willink, now CEO of Twister BV, explained that the Twister Supersonic Separator is a gas conditioning technology that removes liquids from large volumes of gas by forcing the gas through a tube at supersonic speeds.The technology is a unique combination of known physical processes.It is a static piece of equipment with characteristics similar to those of a turbo-expansion/compression system.Gas is expanded isentropically and adiabatically, a reversible thermodynamic process, in a Laval nozzle, creating supersonic velocities and low temperatures (for example, a temperature at inlet of 20°C drops mid-Twister to -50°C).The low temperatures create a fog-like condensation, which is typically a mixture of water and heavier hydrocarbons.Chemical hydrate suppression is not required due to the very short time the gas is in the device, as well as the supersonic velocities within the tube.Still at supersonic velocities, the mixture of gas and liquid droplets enters the wing section, generating a high velocity swirl that forces the condensation outward to form a liquid film on the inner wall of the tube, which is then removed using either a co-axial tube or slits in the wall of the separation tube.
