Kaye Wachsmuth, PhD, was appointed deputy administrator of the FSIS Office of Public Health and Science in September, after serving in an acting capacity since November 1996.Dr. Jill Hollingsworth has left her position as assistant deputy administrator to Dr. Wachsmuth to join the FSIS Office of Field Operations.

Dr. Wachsmuth came to the USDA in 1996 as assistant deputy administrator for science and technology.Before joining the USDA, she was deputy director for programs at the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.At the CDC, she has been deputy director of the Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Disease and chief of the Enteric Diseases Laboratory Section.She worked extensively in Southeast Asia and South America to establish laboratory-based diarrheal disease surveillance.
Her related work includes chairing the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Food and the Codex Committee for Food Hygiene.Dr. Wachsmuth has received awards for benchmark epidemiologic investigations of Legionnaire's disease, cholera in Latin America, drug-resistant tuberculosis, and hantavirus in the western United States.
