Kay Yasugi from Pupperoos recently took a research trip to Bali in Indonesia to explore its culture and puppetry. She spent most of her time in Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali. One of the highlights was doing aWayang Kulit (shadow puppet) making course at the Puri Lukisan Cultural Museum, as well as seeing a traditional Wayang Kulit performance. She also visited Master shadow puppeteer I Made Sidia, who spoke to her about the philosophy behind Wayang Kulit and the importance of this art form for the Balinese people. Kay also had the pleasure of seeing 'Bali Agung', a fantastic theatre production that I Made Sidia co-directed, which is showing at the Bali Safari and Marine Park in Gianyar.

After a week of exploring shadow puppetry, venturing on cultural tours, meandering through picturesque rice terraces, sketching ancient ruins, visiting Balinese homes, navigating through bustling markets, sampling the local cuisine and even going on a twilight elephant safari, Kay is back in Sydney and fully inspired to run some new workshops!

Puppeteer Kay Yasugi from Pupperoos recently completed a wonderful puppet project at theGreenwood School in Mill Valley, California USA (just outside of San Francisco). She volunteered as a puppet designer, maker and operator to help the school create puppets and a float for their annual Memorial Day Parade.
This project also allowed Kay to find out more about Waldorf (Rudolf Steiner) education, as Greenwood is a Waldorf-inspired school.

Kay worked with students, teachers and parents from the school community to make a colourful myriad of puppets including flapping owls made from paper lanterns and 'book butterflies' made from lesson pages, bamboo and pipe cleaners.

During 4th-18th June 2011, puppeteer Kay Yasugi from Pupperoos attended a marionette carving workshop at the Puppets in Prague Schoolin the Czech Republic. The course is run by Mirek Trejtnar and Leah Gaffen, with other visiting tutors including Zdar Šorm(carving/technology), Sota Sakuma (carving) and Dora Bouzkova (puppet manipulation).

Kay Yasugi from Pupperoos will soon be travelling to Prague and the UK for an exciting 3 months of exploring marionette puppetry and education. She will first be visiting the Puppets in Prague school in the Czech Republic where she will do an intensive 2 week marionette carving course. She will also attend the Prague Quadrennial, which is the International Exhibition of Scenography and Theatre Architecture held every 4 years. It is the principal international theatre and scenic exhibition, where 60 countries contribute entries. Â
Kay will also travel to the UK to revisit the London School of Puppetry, where she completed a Masters-Level Diploma in Professional Puppetry in 2009. She will be going back to the school to further explore teaching marionettes in education and therapy.
