Kay Yasugi from Pupperoos recently took a research trip to Bali in Indonesia to explore its culture and puppetry. She spent most of her time in Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali. One of the highlights was doing aWayang Kulit (shadow puppet) making course at the Puri Lukisan Cultural Museum, as well as seeing a traditional Wayang Kulit performance. She also visited Master shadow puppeteer I Made Sidia, who spoke to her about the philosophy behind Wayang Kulit and the importance of this art form for the Balinese people. Kay also had the pleasure of seeing 'Bali Agung', a fantastic theatre production that I Made Sidia co-directed, which is showing at the Bali Safari and Marine Park in Gianyar.

Puppeteer Kay Yasugi from Pupperoos recently completed a wonderful puppet project at theGreenwood School in Mill Valley, California USA (just outside of San Francisco). She volunteered as a puppet designer, maker and operator to help the school create puppets and a float for their annual Memorial Day Parade.
This project also allowed Kay to find out more about Waldorf (Rudolf Steiner) education, as Greenwood is a Waldorf-inspired school.
Kay worked with students, teachers and parents from the school community to make a colourful myriad of puppets including flapping owls made from paper lanterns and 'book butterflies' made from lesson pages, bamboo and pipe cleaners.
For the last 8 months, puppeteer Kay Yasugi from Pupperoos has been working on the set of a new children's television show called "The Amazing House" in Sydney, Australia. Kay has spent many of those days channeling her inner child as she played the role of 3 year old "Benji", whose favourite pastimes are eating and playing games.
The current series is directed by Andrew Suzuki, produced by Robert Bremner and stars the very talented Taryn Douglas as the host, alongside her cheeky friends Fi-be (played by Kailah Cabanas) and Benji (played by Kay Yasugi).
Kay was also thrilled to include some of her own puppets in the show, including 'Pepperoni Toni' and Mr Banana.
Puppet maker Kay Yasugi was assisted by the brilliant sewing talents of artist Erika Haverly Cholich, who whipped up Officer Dan's fine uniform and accessories.
