On January 16, 2011, Katie Barger
earned the prestigious honor of becoming Miss Rodeo USA
2011 during the fourth and final round of the International Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City.
wrote herself down in history as the very first young lady from Arkansas to ever win the title as well as the first young lady representing the Pawnee Bill Memorial Rodeo in Pawnee, Oklahoma.
"I am honored to be the new Miss Rodeo USA
and am looking forward to promoting the sport that I love so much.
I am excited to get to travel all over the United States and Canada sharing my platform "Give a Smile".
is the 20-year-old daughter of Kenneth and Kristie Barger and has one twin brother, Keaton.
Katie was working toward her Associate of Health Sciences Degree at Arkansas State University in Heber Springs.
She plans on finishing her degree there after her reign as Miss Rodeo USA and then transfer to the University of Central Arkansas to begin the Nurse Practitioner Program and specialize in pediatrics.
Raised in the small country town of Quitman, Arkansas, Katie
is no newcomer to the horse industry.
began competing in rodeos as soon as she
conquered a walk and a trot at age 4.
Over the years, Katie
continued to rodeo in various associations such as the Arkansas Teenage Rodeo Association
, the Arkansas Cowboys Association
, the Central Arkansas Little Britches Rodeo Association
, and eventually made her
way up to the Arkansas High School Rodeo Association
competed for all four years.
competed in barrel racing, goat tying, and pole bending; however, her
favorite event was goat tying.
considers herself very blessed to have grown up around rodeo, which taught her
the value of hard work, responsibility, respect, loyalty, and attitude.
Rodeo also allowed Katie
to take part in events such as "Toys for Tots
" and to even visit Arkansas Children's Hospital
It was at this hospital that Katie
's platform was inspired when a patient asked Katie
, 'Are you an angel?' With a simple smile, Katie impacted that little boy in a huge way, and he
