"If everybody would spay or neuter, we could let all the shelters go broke and be happy about it," says Kathy Sowell, director of the Humane Society.

The Humane Society always has better luck finding homes for younger cats and dogs, said Humane Society director Kathy Sowell, but has been able to find homes for animals of all ages pretty successfully this summer.

"This is a hot-pick time.We had a real good month last month," Sowell said."Last weekend alone we adopted out 23.That includes three adults."
Though business has been better than usual for the last year, according to Sowell, the Humane Society may not even be putting a dent in the unwanted pet population in this area. That's evidence that not enough people spay or neuter their pets in York and Mecklenburg counties, Sowell said.
"There's no way we can handle as many requests as we get," Sowell said.

Originally in very poor condition, said Humane Society Director Kathy Sowell, the pup is now gaining weight and doing better. She's been named Angel by the shelter's volunteers, who will keep her until Funderburk's case is settled.

"She is still his possession, but we're going to fight it as much as we can if they give the dog back to him," Sowell said.

Kathy Sowell, director of the Humane Society, said they were concerned about the dog remaining alive during the first few days they were caring for it.

"A couple of more days with the same care she had been getting, and she would have died of flea anemia," Sowell said.
The black pup, now named Angel, is gaining weight and doing much better, Sowell said.
